Loved (and published) by cool magazines and worn by the most astute fashionistas, Sandy Liang’s latest collection stands out for the expressive imagery it characterises. Among her sources of inspiration are the films of Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola and skater culture (she only learned how to skateboard last year and now has her own customised board).
She lives on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and her creative impulse is nourished by her wanderings through the city: the young designer likes to recount that often an item comes from an unexpected intuition springing up from an encounter or a scene on a street, without an initial predefined colour palette.
Sandy Liang began by studying architecture, but soon realised that her path was elsewhere and she enrolled in the prestigious Parsons Design School, which opened the doors to interesting internships at Opening Ceremony, Jason Wu and Phillip Lim. Her fashion influences are Miuccia Prada, Dries Van Noten and Consuelo Castiglioni.
Her first collection comes from her thesis project: the FW14 captures the energy of cities mixing themselves with a modern savoir-faire. The starting point is the feisty grandmothers of Chinatown, which led to the creation of unique clothes, flashy and exaggerated, characterised by eccentric proportions, colours and combinations.
Among her favourite materials are leather («the more time passes, the better it becomes») and especially fur: mohair and mink often combined with wool, shearling and denim.
A Nineties mood interpreted by a contemporary look, where the proportions are often oversized but full of an uninhibited chic style. The Sandy Liang girl does not take herself too seriously and in any case is already far away on her next adventure in the city.
