Dark RomanceRed and black enhance the intriguing collection of Finnish designer Linda Kokkonen. Tapping into Victorian fashion, streetstyle and an incurably romantic gothic imaginary, the garments swing between a mix of modernism and tradition, abundant with out of time billowy silhouettes like a “contemporary banshee”

An exciting collection made entirely from recovered or recycled material: thanks to Linda Kokkonen, the year 2018 at the Hyères International Fashion and Photography Festival will be remembered as the one that represented sustainable fashion. Currently attending a master degree at the Aalto University of Art & Design in Helsinki, at the Hyères Festival Linda Kokkonen presented her graduation collection, ranking among the top ten finalists and arousing great interest. Her themes? Witchcraft, Victorian fashion and the bikers world, apparently distant but contiguous in the designer’s imagination. Linda Kokkonen has always been interested in the spirituality of the natural world and this pantheistic connection is what has spontaneously been explored with her first collection: something very personal, which represents who she really is as a creator. During the intense months of production, she worked incessantly colouring the silk personally, working heavy yarns, managing the screens and learning the devoré textile printing technique, also known as burnout. The theme of sustainability in the collection is fundamental: the black leather used in the collection is recycled, as well as the jerseys, yarns and the lace, while the red one derives from the processing waste of a Finnish company that markets reindeer skin. Starting from an almost theatrical aesthetic vision that she had, Linda Kokkonen then changed her mind, letting herself be influenced by the basic model of the motorcycle jumpsuit reshaped in a very personal version. The intricate blend of materials and techniques helps to create a bewitching and modern collection with a suggestive atmosphere between dream and reality, between the dazzling daylight and the mysterious darkness of the night.
