Fani Xenophontos is a spirited young designer of precious models with a unique touch
The collections of Fani Xenophontos share a common denominator: fanatical attention to details together with an intriguing blend of different materials, be these fabrics, leather or fur.
This Cypriot designer set up her own brand in 2004 and has already carved a name and space for herself in the fashion scenario. What is so enchanting about her work is the ability to create modern pieces of new cuts that are also, at the same time, full of charm and femininity. Her talent plus in-depth knowledge of all the textile techniques enable her to reinterpret diverse materials season after season. All the pieces are made by hand in her atelier in Cyprus together with 20 craftspeople with long years of experience.
What made you choose to work with furs and leather?
I find these two materials extraordinary because they can always be freshly interpreted and take on forms other than the original ones. I also love to combine leather and fur with fabric, so as to create garments that are luxurious and sophisticated.
What makes your collections unique?
What makes by work different from others is certainly the use of various techniques like weaving fabric and leather or combining fox and karakul with linings in nylon and techno fabrics. The shapes I choose, in contrast to the outstanding materials, are simple and minimal while the colour range is basically black and grey with touches of white. This way by collections are always sophisticated, refined, never excessive.
What target are your collections aimed and which are the outlet markets?
The woman who chooses to wear my clothes has a strong, independent behaviour, who loves a style that is personal and minimal at the same time. As regards markets, I would say I focus on that of Russia but at present my creations are selling well also in Europe, above all Italy and the United Kingdom. My collections were immediately included by famous concept stores such as Spiga 2 (created by Dolce & Gabbana) and Santiago in Beirut.
What are the characteristics of the new A/W 2013/14 collection?
The key words of my new collection are: sculpted, folk and artisanal.
I have aimed at shapes which look like sculptures and that can be made of material mixes including raw wool, felt, karakul, fox and fine nappa. The emphasis is on artisanal workmanship in creating details and the use of diverse techniques of knitting and weaving leather and fabric.
